Driver's License Center, 社会保障 Number 和 Banks

This is only a brief overview on these topics.

• Bring all documents (such as passport, I-20形式, 和 copy of current I-94).
• Be familiar with the procedure 和 requirements.
• A letter with proof of current enrollment may be requested from the International Student Services  office.

Plan your time carefully. 

• Be prepared for long lines 和 considerable waits.

If you have an appointment, be on time.

• Punctuality is valued 和 是一个 way of being respectful.
• If you miss an appointment, you may have to reschedule for a不her day.

• Show a copy of the 社会保障 Publication No. 05-10096 or No. 05-10181 if needed to prove that you are ineligible for a SSN.

• The Tennes看到 Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) provides a list to their employees with all visa types that are 不 required to show SSN for driver’s certificate.  在那里 是一个 社会保障 Number Affidavit form that you will need to complete 和 use.

Open a bank account at the bank’s main office.

• Check with the International Student Services Coordinator to ensure your SEVIS record 处于活动状态. You should wait at least 10 days 后 you enter the country 和 48 hours 后 your record has been activated (registered) in SEVIS for the current term.
• A letter with proof of current enrollment 和 local address may be requested from the English Language Institute office if needed.
• Be sure to bring all required documents--有效护照 with visa, I-20形式, copy of 当前的i - 94, proof of residency, etc. (见 Temporary Driver License)
• Be prepared for long lines at the driver’s license office.
• Make an appointment for your road driving tests, but remember you can only take the 道路试验 后 you have passed both the written 和 the vision tests.

社会保障

In general, only noncitizens who have permission to work from the Department of 首页l和 Security (DHS) can apply for a 社会保障 number. Lawfully admitted noncitizens can get many benefits 和 services 没有 a 社会保障 number.

Although sometimes requested, it is 不 required that you have a social security number for things such as:

• Obtaining a driver’s license.
• Applying to rent/purchase a house or apartment.
• Applying for a bank account.
• 注册入学.
• Obtaining health insurance.
